Theatre Productions

At CNCF, theatre is at the heart of everything we do. Born from the Inn Theatre Company, we have spent more than forty years bringing powerful stories to life on stage — and that commitment has never been stronger.

In 2022, we expanded our model to include a structure of dynamic programmes which work alongside Caymanian performing arts organisations to support their annual productions, in addition to continuing to commission and develop original Caymanian work.

Theatre at the Foundation

Under the leadership of former Artistic Director Henry Muttoo, MBE, and guest directors over the years, CNCF has hosted numerous productions of both world-renowned plays and original local productions, including Caymanian playwright Frank McField’s Time Longer Than Rope, One White, One Black, and many others.

Renewing our focus in 2022, the Foundation evolved its programme to form collaborative partnerships with multiple Caymanian performing arts organisations to better support their annual productions, in addition to hosting touring companies and commissioning new work.

Within this revised approach to our programme, we continue to commission and support the development of Caymanian theatre, including the annual comedy recital ‘Wha Happening?’, written, directed, and produced by Caymanian creative Matt Brown. Born from the legacy of ‘Rundown’ — a production created by Dave Martins and Henry Muttoo, MBE — this is a fast-paced mix of stand-up, parodies, and sketches that hilariously delve into modern life in the Cayman Islands.

We also showcase a busy seasonal schedule of theatre, concerts, and recitals in our 300-seat Harquail Theatre and our smaller 80-seat Studio Theatre. Learn more about our creative partner companies and productions here.

The Playwrights

At the heart of theatre are the playwrights, the creative minds who craft new stories and keep this timeless art form evolving. Each year, the Foundation hosts a playwriting masterclass and round-table writing opportunities. Playwrights are also invited to participate in the Foundation Artist-in-Residence programme and fellowships for a chance to develop their work in a supported environment. Supporting playwrights ensures that theatre continues to thrive in the Cayman Islands, staying relevant to modern audiences while offering fresh perspectives on the world we live in.
